We did have some excitement yesterday. Boxes 3 and 4 both still had only partial nests. (Grass only so far, but I suspect they are swallows so look for feathers to line the nest before eggs appear. If they don't, we have bluebirds--blue eggs). I took the sticks out of Box #4 as the birds won't come back to complete the nest with those sticks in there. Let's hope they return now. Box#5 had a wasp in it and two wasp nests started. We waited for the wasp to leave, then I took out the partial nests and we soaped the box again. This nest may be given up to wasps, but that is a lesson itself, I guess. Box #6 has a completed nest with beautiful feathers, but no eggs that we could see yet. I gave everyone a chance to look inside at the nest with the mirror. The swallows were nearby when both of the last two groups checked #4 and #5, so I expect eggs soon. Once they begin laying, they should lay one egg a day until they are finished (probably four to five eggs)
Our first year.
