As of today, May 21, here is the status of the Kendal Trail:
- There are a total of 25 boxes – 6 on poles, 18 on fence posts, one in a tree. Of these, all but three are occupied.
- Altogether there are 3 active Bluebird nests, 18 active Tree Swallow nests, and one active Chickadee nest.
- First nest: first egg laid on April 17, total of 5 eggs in the clutch. They have hatched, but we need to check with the owner about fledglings.
- Second nest: first egg laid on April 28, also eventually 5 eggs, all hatched on May 13. Looking good, feathers, etc.
- Third nest: first egg laid on April 26, then laid only one more. Of those two, one has hatched. As of May 16, the second egg remains unhatched.
- All the nests had either 5 or 6 eggs.
- 10 clutches just hatched or were actually in the process of hatching today. In spite of our best efforts, we were unable to count those squirming little bodies.
- 8 nests still in the incubating stage. On at least three of those nests, the brooding bird was so intent on its job that she did not leave the box when we opened to check.
Stay tuned!
